Notes

First edition under this title, first published in 1789 as "The Bee-master's Companion and Assistant". James Bonner "who was Bee-Master at Auchencrow, near Berwick-on-Tweed, was the most able and the best known of Scottish bee-men" (British Bee Books, p. 99). Bonner appeals to the Scottish landed gentry to cultivate bee-hives, and addresses the problems that bee-keepers face in the Scottish climate and environment. Minor title page variations are known, this with the higher price of 4s. 6d and with "world" spelt correctly.
Provenance: With the bookplate of Thomas Macknight, 8th Baron of Cartsburn (1856-1909), and with the stamp to bookplate and pencilled shelf mark to front pastedown and title page of the Lawes Agricultural Library. The library was assembled in the early 20th century by Sir John Russell, director of the Rothamsted agricultural research institution in Hertfordshire, and ranked as one of the finest English collections of agricultural material.
