A Selection by the Author.London: Penguin, 1958 Stock Code: 147380
First edition, first impression, familiarly inscribed by the author using his first name reserved for friends on the title page: "To Bill from Wystan", his printed name struck through.
The recipient was Dr William ("Woods") Shelton Gray, Jr (1926-1993); his ownership inscription is on the half-title of this copy. Gray fostered friendships with major literary figures such as Auden and T. S. Eliot, and on one occasion met Ezra Pound. Auden dedicated the poem "The Aliens" to Gray, toured Europe with him, and in 1971 found him a position as a visiting lecturer in American Literature at the University of Graz in Austria.
This volume is a "substantive collection and revision of Auden's poetry" (Bloomfield and Mendelson).
Octavo. Original patterned wrappers, titles in black to spine and front cover.
Wrappers toned but bright, price pencilled to front cover, contents toned with trivial faint spot to top corners, inscription to final page. A good copy.
Bloomfield and Mendelson A40a.
