Notes

First edition in book-form, first impression. The book comprises three articles Keynes wrote when he and Lydia Lopokova visited Russia in 1925, soon after their marriage. The articles first appeared in the Nation and Athenaeum in October 1925. "A Short View of Russia failed to sell very well at the start. Issued by Leonard Woolf in December 1925 as number thirteen in the two-year-old Hogarth Essays series, Keynes's pamphlet had sold only 700 copies by the end of February 1926. Perhaps his largely negative view of Soviet Russia told enthusiasts what they did not want to hear" (Willis, Leonard and Virginia Woolf as Publishers: The Hogarth Press, 1917-41, p. 219).
