First edition, bound from the original monthly parts, first issue, with page 213 incorrectly numbered 113 and signature "b" on list of plates. From the library of the novelist Richard Adams (1920-2016), best known as the author of Watership Down (1972), with his bookplate to the pastedown. Adams used the proceeds of his novels to develop an extensive book collection, including first editions of various Dickens works.

Description

Octavo (214 x 135 mm). Near-contemporary purple half calf with marbled sides, endpapers and edges.

Illustrations

Frontispiece with tissue-guard, engraved title, and 14 plates by H. K. Browne.

Condition

Spine faded to brown, a little worn around cover edges, front cover lightly rubbed, some gatherings standing very slightly proud, some foxing to plates and title page, offset on p. 1 from where a slip of paper had been inserted. An excellent copy.
