Notes

First edition, first printing. Presentation copy to Lawrence Ferlinghetti, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "For Lawrence Ferling sic Luck etc Louis Zukofky Sept 1, 1954". Ferlinghetti was a key figure among the Beat writers and was the publisher of Allen Ginsberg's Howl. Zukofsky's book is an attempt to apply objective principles to the analysis of poetry, using examples from Homer to contemporary poets. The book serves as a handbook for, and a key product of, the "Objectivist" school of poetic analysis, which has shaped modernist poetry to this day.
