NotesFirst edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to his cousin Patty Shute on the front free endpaper, "For Patty, Peggy and Duane, from Nevil. June 1950", and also signed by him on the title page as Nevil S. Norway (Shute used his full name in his engineering career, and Nevil Shute as his pen name). Patty was mentioned in Shute's autobiography, Slide Rule, as being his Cornish cousin, who was a great confidante of his older brother Fred (p. 19).
Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine gilt and to front board in blind, top edge red. With the supplied dust jacket.
Spine faded and slightly rolled, small mark to spine, internally clean. A very good copy in the bright jacket with some minor loss and creasing to spine ends, small chip to foot of rear panel, two short closed tears and creasing to foot of front panel, a few nicks and small creases to extremities.
