Notes

First edition, first printing. Betty Smith's coming-of-age novel set in turn-of-the-century New York was an immediate bestseller, gaining enormous popularity among front line US servicemen via an Armed Services Edition produced in a huge numbers: "Betty Smith's A Tree Grows in Brooklyn was perhaps the most popular ASE of them all. It provided such a vivid account of childhood that many men felt as though Smith were writing about theirs" (Molly Guptill Manning, When Books Went to War: the stories that helped us win World War II, 2014, p. 105).
