Notes

First edition thus, limited issue, number 11 of 20 copies printed on handmade paper by the Chiswick Press and bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe in red morocco, from a total run of 250 copies. Shelley's elegy for Keats, first published in 1821 (the year of Keats's death) is considered among the finest of Shelley's work, described by him as his "least imperfect poem" (Woodings, p. 213). This copy is from the library of the literary editors Wilfrid and Alice Meynell, with Wilfrid's ownership inscription to the front free endpaper, "Wilfrid, 17th April, 1936". Wilfrid (1852-1948) and Alice (1847-1922) were active as both writers and editors, running the publishing firm Burns and Oates, editing the Weekly Register and Merry England, and contributing poetry and articles to numerous other publications. In 1888 they rehabilitated the poet Francis Thompson (1859-1907), providing him with work, lodging, and the ability to carry out his literary research. In 1908 they posthumously published a large selection of his works, which included a long essay on Shelley that was reissued in book from 1909. Their youngest child, Francis Meynell (1891-1975), was active in the running of Burns and Oates, and in 1923 founded the Nonesuch Press with his wife Vera Mendel, and their friend David Garnett.
