Notes

First English edition, first impression, of this second novel (originally published as "Nachkrieg" (1930), the sequel to "Krieg" (1928), or War (1929)), by "Ludwig Renn", pseudonym of Arnold Friedrich Vieth von Golßenau (1889-1979), the aristocratic German novelist who later joined the Communist party in 1928, was arrested in 1932 by the Nazis for ("literary high treason"), served (alongside Ernest Hemingway) in the International Brigade in Spain, and eventually emigrated to Mexico. The author had fought in the trenches during the First World War, "After War" is based on the German experience following the Armistice.
