Signed limited edition, number 160 of 250 copies signed by the artist. "Publication was delayed by the war - Ransome complained on 15 February 1915 that Mackenzie has 'suddenly gone off to Serbia' - and by Ransome's own absence from England" (Hammond). This is one of the finest work of the illustrator Thomas Mackenzie (1887-1944).

Quarto. Original white cloth, spine and front cover lettered and stamped in gilt, top edges gilt, other untrimmed, pictorial endpapers.

Colour frontispiece, 11 colour plates tipped-in as issued, captioned tissue guards, tissue guards laid in between endpapers, decorative black and white title page, decorative designs bordering the letterpress, numerous designs throughout.
Condition
Spine a little rolled and tanned, back board lightly marked, a little foxing to the fore edges of a few pages, otherwise an excellent copy.
