Notes

First and limited edition, number 54 of 760 copies signed and dated by Einstein. This copy additionally inscribed by the editor on the half-title: "To Arnold H. Crane with the best wishes of Paul A. Schilpp, Glenview Ill., August 16, 1965". The recipient may have been the Chicago-based photographer Arnold H. Crane (b. 1932), who initially practised there as an attorney. Paul A. Schilpp (1897-1993) "was widely known as a scholar and teacher. He founded the Library of Living Philosophers in 1938 and served as its editor until July of 1981... Dr. Schilpp travelled and lectured widely throughout the world. He held a visiting professorship at the University of Munich, Germany; was awarded the Watumull Foundation Lectureship in India and Ceylon; and represented the U.S. Department of State at the Pakistan Philosophical Congress" (Southern Illinois University). Schilpp's papers, including his correspondence with Einstein, are held at Southern Illinois.
This handsomely produced volume includes the first publication of Einstein's "Autobiographical Notes" (in parallel German and English), described by the distinguished biographer Abraham Pais as "the closest Einstein ever came to writing an autobiography. Indispensible" ('Subtle is the Lord...': The Science and the Life of Albert Einstein, OUP 2005, p.49); alongside this is a Festschrift of "descriptive and critical essays" on Einstein's work, his response and a bibliography.
