NotesRevised Bell and Daldy Aldine edition. The celebrated Aldine Edition of the British Poets was begun by William Pickering in 1830, with the reputable scholars Alexander Dyce, Nicholas Harris Nicolas, and John Mitford as editors. George Bell bought most of Pickering's publications, including the Aldine series of poets, which he subsequently revised and expanded.
52 volumes, octavo (168 x 100 mm). Contemporary half calf, red and black morocco labels to spines, titles and tooling to spines in gilt, raised bands, marbled sides, endpapers, and edges.
With frontispieces and vignette titles.
Some minor rubbing to spine tips and board edges, minor worm-hole to single volume, couple of hinges slightly cracked but holding, contemporary full page gift inscription to the front blank of Chaucer Volume 1. Overall sound and presentable, a very good set.
