First edition of Through the Looking-Glass, together with an early edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, this being from the 12th thousand, published just three years after the first edition of 1865, handsomely bound as a set by Bayntun of Bath. The Alice books earned the author "a place in the firmament of the great, for they are not only acts of imaginative genius but they also revolutionized writing for children" (ODNB).Description
2 works, octavo (176 x 120 mm). Recent red crushed morocco by Bayntun, titles to spines in gilt, motifs blocked in gilt to spine in compartments, White Rabbit and Queen of Hearts blocked in gilt to front covers, turn-ins tooled in gilt, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. Housed in a custom red marbled paper slipcase.

Condition
Small bookplate of S. Leonhardt tipped in to front free endpaper versos, faintly erased gift inscription to front free endpaper verso of Alice's Adventures, faint contemporary ownership inscription of Florence C. Gardner to half-title of the same. Illustrations at p. 5 and p.227 of Through the Looking Glass neatly and subtly coloured. Very occasional faint foxing, a beautiful set in fine condition.
