All Quiet on the Western Front.
Translated from the German by A. W. Wheen.
London: G. P. Putnam's Sons, March 1929 Stock Code: 145307
First edition in English, first impression, in the first state jacket with "German Opinions" on the front flap.
The present UK edition of the work preceded the US edition by three months. Originally serialised in the Vossische Zeitung in late 1928, Remarque's elegy to the generation that had been "destroyed by war, even though it might have escaped its shells", was first issued in book form in January 1929 and sold 2.5 million copies in 22 languages in its first eighteen months in print (Falls, p. 293). It was adapted into a highly successful film in 1930.
Description
Octavo. Original beige cloth, titles to front board and spine in green, top edge green, bottom edge untrimmed. With dust jacket.
Condition
Spine mildly toned, faint spray of foxing to fore-edge, contents clean and free from ownership marks. A near-fine copy in the very good jacket, with a little loss to head of spine, a little chipping to tips, else a bright, well-preserved example.
Bibliography
Cyril Falls, War Books: A Critical Guide, 1930.
