First edition, first printing, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "To Tom Maschler from Louis Zukofsky enjoying his company at home August 31, 1965", and with the copyright dates of previously published works ink-stamped by hand on the copyright page. With Tom Maschler's bookplate, designed by Quentin Blake, to the front pastedown. Maschler was the managing director of Jonathan Cape, and published the first UK edition of this title later the same year. A leading literary force, Maschler was crucial in the creation of the Booker Prize in 1969.

A fine copy in the slightly toned dust jacket, spine a little faded and minor tears and creasing to extremities.
