First edition of this handsomely bound early 19th century French ladies' almanac. It includes explanations of the pictured artworks, biographies of Joan of Arc and Blanche de Castille, numerous poems, excerpts from academic discussions on religion and other topics, and fragments from classical literature. This is a superbly preserved copy.
Duodecimo (117 x 85 mm). Finely bound in contemporary dark blue straight-grain sheep, titles and decorations in gilt to spine, boards with gilt and blind ruling and decorative motifs to corners, pink coated endpapers, all edges gilt. Housed in a matching red straight-grain sheep slipcase richly gilt.
Engraved title and 8 engraved plates, all with tissue-guard, by Bein after Schidone, del Sarte, Bakhuysen, Van-Mieris (le vieux), Zacht-Leeven, Titian, and two portraits designed by Bein.
Discreet colour restorations to corners, the binding otherwise firm and clean, very occasional faint spotting to contents, else fresh and unmarked; an attractive copy.
