Notes

First and only edition. Extremely uncommon, Copac locates a copy at Oxford, OCLC adds another at Indiana, no copy of the Première Cahier traced. Brilliantly inventive series of figured alphabets, constructed on various themes - the cries of Paris, birds, animals, hunting, foliage, trees, foodstuffs, the army, professions, games and so forth. Savigny de Moncorps notes this work in his study Petits métiers et cris de Paris; "Chaque lettre est représentée par un sujet approprié au cri - Almanachs, balais, chaudronniers, marrons bouillants. oranges, parapluie, vitrier, très jolies petites compositions finement gravées Each letter is represented by a subject appropriate to the cry - almanacs, brooms, coppersmiths, hot chestnuts, oranges, umbrellas, glazier, pretty little compositions, well engraved" (p.41).

Basset published a range of materials through the later part of the eighteenth-century, revolutionary satires, educational works and abécédaires as here, and latterly die-stamped and coloured religious cards. The company was taken over by the house of Bouasse-Lebel around 1865; the individual plates, which bear only the imprint of Maison Basset, were evidently produced a little earlier. Meticulously detailed, the plates fortuitously offer intriguing insights into mid-nineteenth-century French culture.
