An American Dilemma.
The Negro Problem and Modern Democracy.New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1944 Stock Code: 107445
First edition, first printing, one-volume issue. Myrdal shared the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics with Friedrich Hayek in 1974, for "pioneering work in the theory of money and economic fluctuations and for their penetrating analysis of the interdependence of economic, social and institutional phenomena." However, the present study of race relations in America is possibly his best-known and most influential work. Commissioned by the Carnegie Institute, the project drew on sociological, economic, anthropological and legal data, to enquire into the "American Dilemma," the sharp contrast between high ideals and the failure to deliver basic human rights in the 80 years since the Civil War. Myrdal was also a signatory of UNESCO's 1950 statement The Race Question.
