Norman Mosley Penzer (1892-1960) was a British independent scholar and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, the Royal Asiatic Society and the Hakluyt Society. He specialised in Oriental studies, and was an eminent authority on famous British explorer, scholar, and ethnologist Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890). His obituary in The Geographical Journal states that "he was chiefly known at the R.G.S. for his interest in Sir Richard Burton. He edited a volume of selected papers by Burton and he founded, with Dr. F. Grenfell Baker, the Richard Burton Memorial Lecture at the Royal Asiatic Society... Penzer's gifts of scholarship were never as fully developed as many thought they might have been and it will always be a matter of regret that he did not write the definitive biography of Burton it was so well within his power."
Quarto. Publisher's brown cloth, titles in gilt on spine, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, partly unopened.
Portrait frontispiece, and 23 other plates.
