An Enquiry into the Causes of the Miscarriage of the Scots Colony at Darien.
Or An answer to a libel entituled A defence of the Scots abdicating Darien. Submitted to the consideration of the good people of England.Glasgow: 1700 Stock Code: 135275
First edition. A response to the pamphlet A Defence of the Scots Abdicating Darien, which was published anonymously the same year and generally attributed to Walter Harris, especially at the time, though it has since also been attributed to James Hodges and Archibald Foyer. This anonymous response (ESTC notes that it is sometimes attributed to George Ridpath) "contains very severe animadversions on Herries sic - Walter Harris. The book was considered libellous by the English, and was burned by their hangman" (Scott, p. 29). The original pamphlet, which had aggressively attacked many members of the Company, had also been burnt by the Scottish hangman on the orders of the pre-unified Scottish parliament - it is clear why so many Darien pamphleteers wrote anonymously and under pseudonyms. This pamphlet defends the conduct of Company members, even though it was now clear that the Scheme had failed.
Octavo (186 x 109 mm). Disbound pamphlet, remnants of earlier spine.
First and final page a little soiled, at times a little closely cropped at head and with text very close to hinge, some chips due to paper faults without loss to text. A good copy.
