Two inscribed orations by the sixth president of the United StatesFirst edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front wrapper: "Edward Cruft Esq. from John Quincy Adams." Cruft (17761866) was a prominent Boston merchant, loyal political supporter, and husband of Elizabeth Storer Smith, a second cousin of John Quincy Adams, the sixth president of the United States.
Together with a defective presentation copy of a similar work: John Quincy Adams, An Oration Addressed to the Citizens of the Town of Quincy on the Fourth of July, 1831 (Boston: Richardson, Lord and Holbrook, 1831), lacking final ten pages (p. 31-40) and back cover, likewise inscribed on the front wrapper "Edward Cruft Esq. from his friend J. Q. Adams."
Both items come from the estate of descendants of the Cruft family.
Octavo. Side-stitched in original blue paper wrappers, printed title within typographic frame on front wrapper.
Central vertical crease, a few trivial blemishes, an excellent copy in original state.
