Around the World at Eighty.
With an Introduction by Her Daughter, Dorothy Canfield Fisher. A Collection of Letters written while on her Cruise around the World which left New York January, 1925.Rutland, VT.: The Tuttle Company, Marble City Press, 1925 Stock Code: 135804
First edition of this collection of letters recounting the author's voyage around the world on the Cunarder RMS Berengaria - built for HAPAG and launched in 1912 as SS Imperator, briefly commissioned post-WWI as USS Imperator, before being handed over to Cunard as war reparations. The party made landfall in Cuba, Panama, southern California, Hawaii, Japan, China, the Philippines, Java, Burma, India, Egypt, Palestine, and across Europe. Canfield was herself a supporter of women's rights - a promoter of the Women's Club Movement in Ohio - but her daughter Dorothy Canfield Fisher is probably better known as a proponent of racial and gender equality, continued education, and also as a highly successful author of both fiction and non-fiction, the latter including a number of works promoting the Montessori Method, which she had introduced to the US; "The letters and photographs in this book have been given this private printing, partly to keep a record of this first circumnavigation of the globe by one of our family, and partly as a setting down of the experiences of an old lady, rather frail physically but sound, whose interest in the spectacle of life grows keener every year. And they are meant, as far as they are addressed to people outside the family, to reach the many others like her" (Introduction).
Octavo. Original pale grey combed cloth, title gilt to the spine and to the front board together with a mounted halftone of Canfield in a rickshaw. With dust jacket.
Halftone frontispiece and over a hundred other similar illustrations from photographs by Parth & Parth of NYC to the text.
