Arrabida.
Scenery of Portugal & Spain. P&D. COLNAGHI & CO. PALL MALL, East. ACKERMANN & CO. STRAND. 1839 Stock Code: 56212George Vivian (1798-1873), draughtsman and painter from London, travelled through Spain and Portugal making sketches of many old buildings and towns. On his return Vivian made the drawings famous publishing a collection of lithographs under the title "Scenery of Portugal & Spain". The work consists of 33 magnificent drawings on stone by L. Haghe. Vivian selected the most interesting and picturesque scenes for the lithographs, delivering a vivid picture of the countries in the early nineteenth century.
Vivian notes: 'The Mountain of Arrabida, in Estremadura, is distant on the Coast, 10 or 12 miles west from Setubal. The Franciscan Convent - a curious assemblage of buildings, with many isolated chapels, and a large Hospitium lies in a sheltered spot, remarkable for the luxuriance of the vegetation. The greater part of the mountain is a thick shrubbery of Arbutus, Bay, Laurestine, Balm of Gilead, Myrtle & other Evergreens, mixed with Honeysuckle, and a variety of bulbous plants.' Engraved by HAGHE, L.
