Art Blakey: A Night at Birdland.
Volumes 1 and 2.New York: Blue Note, c. 1965 Stock Code: 144327
Attractive pairing of two of Blakey's finest albums with the nascent Jazz Messengers, billed here as the Art Blakey Quintet, both signed boldly "Art Blakey" in blue marker pen across the back covers.
These two sets at Birdland in February 1954 featured Clifford Brown, Lou Donaldson, Horace Silver, and Curley Russell. The discs are tagged as "Core Collection" and awarded the maximum four stars by the Penguin Guide to Jazz, which comments, "much as Blakey dominates the music he always plays for the band and inspirational leadership is as evident on these early records as it is on his final ones".
2 12-inch vinyl LPs (Blue Note BLP-1521 / BST-81521 and BLP-1522 / BST-81522), new plain paper sleeves (Volume 2 also with original inner sleeve), original album covers; later pressing of discs with United Artists name on labels, album covers bearing Liberty Records slug on front, dating these issues to after 1965 when Liberty acquired Blue Note.
A little rubbing and minor shelf wear to covers but remaining bright and sharp, discs in excellent condition.
Discs released initially as 10-inch in July and October 1954 and as 12-inch in August and December 1956.
