First edition with the Pogány illustrations of this German poem. Written by the politically radical poet Heine in 1841 Atta Troll appeared incomplete, and never to be completed, in The Newspaper for the Elegant World, a German literary journal, in 1843. It was first published in book form in 1847, and first published in English in 1876, translated by Thomas Selby Egan, alongside some of Heine's other poems. The eponymous Atta Troll is an escaped dancing bear, hunted by the narrator. Uncommon, listed at auction only twice.
