CAESAR, Julius.

CAESAR, Julius.

Rare books by or on Julius Caesar, including early editions, copies in fine bindings, and handsome sets of his collected works.

Julius Caesar (100 BC – 44BC) was a Roman statesman and general whose campaigns of conquest across Gaul and into Britain, and assumption of the role of perpetual dictator following the defeat of Pompey in 44BC, shaped the foundation of the Roman Empire. Recognised in his own time as an author and orator, Cicero himself described him as ‘the most elegant speaker of Latin of all,’ Caesar’s Commentaries, based on his campaign notes, were considered to be a model of Latin prose and for the writing of history, and were adopted as a strategic and tactical manual down to the early eighteenth century.
