George Orwell (Eric Blair, 1903–1950) was British journalist, political essayist, and author known for his novels Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm. Orwell’s political consciousness first developed when he served as a police superintendant in Burma during the late 1920s and was dismayed by the effects of colonialism.
