Arthur Rackham (1867–1939) was the dominant figure in the illustrated gift-book market in the years leading up to the First World War.

His greatest years of success were 1905–1920, but he had begun his career in the 1890s as a commercial book illustrator, working mostly in black and white. Two factors coincided with the onset of his remarkable success: his marriage in 1903 to Edyth Starkie, a considerable portrait painter in her own right; and the introduction of improved colour printing techniques, which allowed him to develop his early
