Autograph letter signed and two-line quotation from "The Hour-Glass".24 February 1917 Stock Code: 149134
Autograph letter and two-line quotationAn autograph letter signed ("WBYeats") enclosing a separate two-line quotation from his play "The Hour-Glass", both on the author's headed notepaper.
The autograph letter is addressed to "Dear Sir" and responds to the recipient's request for an "autograph you asked for so long ago" and notes that "my correspondence this winter has got beyond my powers of dealing with it". The quotation from "The Hour-Glass" reads "We perish into God and sink away Into reality the rest's a dream.". It is signed and dated "WBYeats Feb 24, 1917".
In 1902 W. B. Yeats informed Lady Gregory that he had devised "a plan for a little religious play in one act". This would become "The Hour-Glass", based on the story entitled "The Priest's Soul" (included in Lady Wilde's 1887 volume entitled The Ancient Legends of Ireland). First published as a prose play in 1903, Yeats substantially rewrote the piece and a revised version (in both prose and verse) was first published in 1913. The two-line quotation is from the revised version of the play and comprises two lines spoken by the character of the Wise Man.
2 leaves (178 x 112 mm), headed notepaper ("18, Woburn Buildings, W.C.").
A few spots of foxing and some browning, creases where once folded, otherwise good.
