Notes

A very scarce signed letter of four pages (latterly mounted in a die-cut paper frame bearing the legend "Mrs Shelley author of 'Frankenstein', daughter of William Godwin") addressing the novelist and editor of The Keepsake, complaining of a returned copy, and mentioning "one of the Keepsakes you sent me has pages omitted& is turned topsy turvy in the bindingI sent it to a friend in the country who finds it a riddle-my-ree". The Keepsake for 1833 contained two stories by Mary Shelley: "The Brother and Sister, an Italian Story" and "The Invisible Girl". Mary Shelley also contributed stories to the 1829 Keepsake, however from the stated location of her letter, written from 33 Somerset Street into which lodgings she moved only later in 1829 and lived until mid 1833, the possibility of a December 1828-January 1829 date is ruled out.
This letter is one of 21 autograph letters acquired from the Mary Shelley specialist Professor Jean de Palacio of the University of Lille - this small clutch aside, autograph letters from Mary Shelley very seldom come to market.
