Notes

A note to his sister: "I thought I remembered sending, or bringing, the Michelet to Wakefield. But I suppose I was mistaken. The vol. has somehow been lost, unfortunately. Affectionately yours, George Gissing". Gissing had last visited his family in Wakefield in September 1898.
Michelet, best known for his monumental Histoire de France (1833-67) was also author of a number of works promoting the romantic view of nature. Gissing disapproved of Michelet's generalisations about women as the weaker sex, but was otherwise a fan, read many of his books, and described him as "a great and sympathetic genius" (20 November 1898, Collected Letters, VII, pp. 231-2).
