Author Whitney Balliett was the acclaimed music and literature critic who wrote for the New Yorker between 1954 and 2001, covering the jazz scene "during its years of greatest development and ferment" (NYT obituary, February 3, 2007). The present volume was written between 1971 and 1988 as a supplement to his American Musicians, published in 1986, and includes eight portraits that had not previously appeared in book form and seven that had been reworked after appearing in other collections. The subjects include Jean Bach, Max Gordon, Barney Josephson, Bradley Cunningham, Marie Marcus, Claude Thornhill, Jimmy Rowles, Mel Powell, George Shearing, Walter Norris, Harvey Phillips, Benny Goodman, Ruby Braff, Charlie Parker, Buddy De Franco, and Louis Bellson.
