Behaviorism.New York, The People's Institute Publishing Company, 1924-25 Stock Code: 136448
NotesFirst editions of this series of lectures given by Watson, the chief proponent of behaviorism in the US, giving an overview of the discipline. The 12 lectures were given for the non-profit People's Institute as part of their adult education programme, with each lecture printed in pamphlet form afterwards, with the publisher's chemise subsequently issued to house the collection. The lectures were also published in book-form later in 1925. The People's Institute and its eponymous Publishing Company was founded by William Warder Norton in 1924, but although the publishing venture was a success, Norton soon recognized that booksellers preferred a single volume rather than many different pamphlets in a package. In 1925 he reorganized the firm into W. W. Norton and Company, and generally published single-volume books rather than serial issues as pamphlets.
12 octavo pamphlets, loose in green card chemise and black card slipcase as issued.
Chemise and slipcase generally worn, chemise detached along rear panel joint, with front panel joint repaired with tape on verso, slipcase split at foot. Pamphlets with light toning and occasional minor creasing. Overall very good.
