Notes

First edition. The diplomat and orientalist Gore Ouseley (1770-1844) served as ambassador to the Qajar court, and became acquainted with Persian, Sanskrit and Arabic. In the present work, published posthumously, Ouseley set out to make Persian poetry known to English readers. Working from manuscripts in his own collection, he discussed 31 poets and their works. Following on from William Jones before him, Ouseley's book is an important contribution to the western study of Persian literature.
