Bits of Old Chelsea.
A Series of Forty-one Etchings. With letterpress description by Lionel Johnson and Richard Le Gallienne.London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner & Co., Ltd, 1894 Stock Code: 142459
NotesFirst edition, one of 110 copies only, the plates signed by the illustrator, of which 100 were released for sale. The present copy, in the now less encountered original buckram, is in remarkably bright condition.
Bits of Old Chelsea is lavish example of 1890s book production, with text by two fellow bohemian poets and contributors to The Yellow Book, Lionel Johnson and Richard Le Gallienne. The etchings by Walter William Burgess (1856-1908) remain classic evocations of Chelsea and its riverside.
Large folio. Original dark red buckram, spine and front cover lettered gilt, edges uncut, a couple of leaves unopened.
Frontispiece, pictorial title page, printed title page in red and black, and 40 etchings on india paper, tipped in as issued, all plates signed in pencil by the artist.
Foot of spine slightly frayed, minor rubbing to board edges, cloth a little scuffed, contents bright and clean, overall a very good, notably attractive, copy.
