Notes

First edition. The title poem, "Blackheath: or, A Morning Walk in the Spring of 1804", is a long poem in blank verse on that suburb of London, illustrated with engravings by the author's brothers, Samuel and William. Thomas Noble later joined the staff of the Liverpool Mercury newspaper, founded in 1811. The book is dedicated to Princess Caroline, who had lived in Blackheath in riotous manner since the breakdown of her marriage to the prince regent in 1797. The seven-page subscribers list includes several titled names, including Lady Douglas with whom Caroline had been intimate until they quarrelled in 1803, when Lady Douglas was accused in anonymous letters of spreading malicious gossip about Caroline's morals, including allegations that she had borne a child since her separation from the prince of Wales.
