Handcrafted Papercuts by Women in China
Our Asia specialist Dr Matt discusses Myths and Folklore, an album of beautifully handcrafted papercuts made by Chinese students at the Ai Dao Women’s Bible School in the 1930s. The stories they depict in this artwork range from “the Herd Boy and the Weaving Maiden”, explaining the origins of the Milky Way and the constellations, to “the Theft of the Dragon Pearl”, set in the lair of the Dragon King in China’s famous Dongting lake.
