Notes

First edition, signed by the author on the title page. Bonnet over the Windmill was one of a succession of light-hearted comedies that made Dodie Smith into "the most consistently successful woman playwright of her time" (ODNB). At the height of her fame in 1939, with war looming, she and her husband left for the USA with their pet Dalmatian, Pongo, who would inspire The Hundred and One Dalmatians, published in 1953.
