First edition of this uncommon and important narrative of the Second Sikh War (1848-49), combining eye-witness account with an overview of the campaign, this copy in a nice example of the original cloth binding; the author served with the 24th Foot at both Chillianwalla and Gujrat and gives excellent detail of both battles."The objective of this work is to supply from original and official sources, information on some points of interest, which have not been fully explained either in the Despatches relating to the Punjab campaign, or in other sources also reviewing the current of events from the death of Ranjeet Singh to the period in question There is detail about the battles of Ramnagar, Chillianwalla, and Gujrat" (Chopra). Lawrence-Archer (1823-1889),was gazetted second-lieutenant in the 39th Foot in December 1840, and served with the 24th Foot throughout the war. He went on half-pay as a captain in January 1869 and remained on the half-pay list until his death in February 1889. He spent his later years in the composition of a range of historical and genealogical works.

Condition
Ownership inscription of the marquess of Anglesey (dated 1966) to the front free endpaper, contemporary ownership inscription of Major N. I. Foster verso. A little rubbed, minor chipping and splitting head and tail of the spine, hinges neatly repaired, pale toning, but overall a very good copy.
