First edition, first impression. Various writers contributed to this volume of essays on the necessity of preserving rural England, of which the first is John Maynard Keynes, with his essay "Art and the State", originally published in 1936 in The Listener journal. Keynes was a strong supporter of state patronage of the arts, and would later be a leading figure in the formation of the Arts Council and its first chairman.

Condition
Spine a little faded, a couple of tiny markings to cloth, some marking to bottom edge, title page slightly foxed, a few instances of pencil marks in margins, else a very good copy.
