Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor.London: Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1945 Stock Code: 103786
WITH AN ORIGINAL DRAWINGFirst procurable edition, as the original, published by Country Life in 1939, is of legendary scarcity; as explained on the jacket blurb of the present edition "the original edition of this book was published early in the war but destroyed by enemy action. The artist has coloured the plates for this edition presumably a reference to the spot colour". With an original ink sketch by Peake on the front free endpaper, showing a pipe-smoking pirate and inscribed "For Brian from Mervyn Peake". Captain Slaughterboard was Peake's first book.
Square octavo. Original pale oatmeal cloth lettered in green on the front cover. With the dust jacket.
Illustrated throughout in black and white (with spot-colour highlights), printed on blue, pink, yellow, white, and grey paper.
Cloth binding a little soiled, jacket toned and with a few chips, nciks and tears, corner of front free endpaper torn away. A very good copy nonetheless.
