First UK edition in book-form. The UK edition was preceded by the US edition, released the previous month. The work was originally serialized in Pearson's Magazine between 1896 and 1897. Written while the newlywed Kipling was living in Vermont, Captains Courageous is Kipling's only novel set entirely in America. "Kipling thought he'd written a great story. He wrote to Conland Dr. James Conland, the dedicatee, after the book had begun to appear serially, 'I tell you that tale will be a snorter'" (Gidmark, p. 71).

Crown octavo. Original blue cloth, titles and decorations to spine and front cover gilt, black endpapers, gilt edges.

Condition
Spine very lightly rubbed at ends, tip of one corner lightly bumped, scattered mild foxing to contents. An excellent copy, cloth and gilt bright and fresh.
