1761 Stock Code: 60654Interesting chart of the strait of Gibraltar by the famed French cartographer and hydrographer Jacques-Nicholas Bellin. The map shows the Spanish coast and African land on the other side of the strait. Map orientation shows north to the left, large detailed annotated inset plan of the fortress of Gibraltar, also tide charts in the Straits. Decorative cartouche on the right.
Bellin was appointed hydrographer (chief cartographer) to the French Navy upon the creation of France's hydrographic office, the Dépôt des cartes et plans de la Marine. Over a 50-year career, he produced a large number of maps and charts. The accuracy of Bellin's charts ensured that they were in use for many years.
