Cetywayo and His White Neighbours,
or, Remarks on Recent Events in Zululand, Natal, and the Transvaal. Second Edition with a New Introduction.London: Trübner & Co., 1888 Stock Code: 102738
NotesSecond edition. The book was first published in 1882. On his return to Britain following the outbreak of the First Anglo-Boer War, Haggard had been unable to find a publisher willing to take on his denunciation of Britain's South African policies, and paid Trübner 50 to print a small run of 750; however, only 154 copies sold in two years. The book was reissued in the aftermath of the runaway success of King Solomon's Mines, and proved much more popular, reaching a fourth edition by 1891. From the library of Roger Allen, the founder and secretary of the Rider Haggard Society, with his ownership signature to the front pastedown.
Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine and front board gilt, brown coated endpapers.
Spine rolled and ends rubbed, tips lightly worn, rear hinge starting, minor foxing to edges and endleaves. A very good copy.
