First edition, a handsomely bound copy. Skelton was a Scottish lawyer and literary figure; "In his historical work he characteristically displayed something of the spirit of the advocate" (ODNB). He also wrote a number of works on Mary Stuart.
Description
Quarto (322 x 245 mm). Finely bound in red crushed half morocco, red cloth sides with Royal Arms less lion and unicorn to front board gilt; spine in compartments separated by raised bands ruled in gilt, titles direct to second and third with date to foot gilt, first and fifth with crown and monogram device to centre and fleur-de-lys cornerpieces gilt, fourth and sixth with central Tudor rose device with fleur-de-lys corner pieces between thistle tools gilt; top edge gilt, fore edge untrimmed, marbled endpapers.

Colour portrait frontispiece and 23 plates, 18 vignettes to the text, all with tissue guards with descriptive letterpress; figurative initials at head of each chapter.
Condition
Bookplate to front pastedown. Slightly worn and faded overall with a few pale markings to sides, light wear to head of spine, corners a touch bumped, faint spotting to border of a few plates with engravings unaffected, f. 2 with lower corner excised and incision to fore edge crudely repaired with no loss of text, a few tissue guards gently creased. A good copy, complete with the imprimatur leaf to rear.
