Notes

First UK edition of the complete trilogy in English; the translation, by I. F. Hapgood, was originally published at New York by T. Y. Crowell in 1886. The UK edition is very uncommon: Copac and OCLC together locating six copies in British and institutional libraries (BL, NLS, Cambridge, Leeds, Sussex, London Library), and another six abroad. Tolstoy's autobiographical trilogy, first published in three volumes as Detstvo (1852), Otrochestvo (1854) and Yunost' (1856), was the work that first brought him literary acclaim. The earliest English translation, of Childhood and Boyhood only, was that of Malwida von Meysenbug (London: Bell & Daldy 1862), described by Sadleir as "very scarce".
