City Without Walls and Other Poems.New York: Random House, 1969 Stock Code: 146846
First US edition, first printing, familiarly inscribed by the author using his first name reserved for friends on the title page: "To Bill Gray with love from Wystan. Feb 1970".
The recipient Dr William ("Woods") Shelton Gray, Jr (1926-1993) fostered friendships with major literary figures such as Auden and T. S. Eliot, and on one occasion met Ezra Pound. Auden dedicated the poem "The Aliens" to Gray, toured Europe with him, and in 1971 found him a position as a visiting lecturer in American Literature at the University of Graz in Austria.
Loosely inserted is a contemporary newspaper clipping reviewing Auden. It was first published earlier in the same year in the UK.
Octavo. Original dark red quarter cloth, yellow cloth sides, spine lettered in gilt, front cover stamped in blind with the author's initials, dark green endpapers, top edge blue, other edges untrimmed. With dust jacket.
A fine, sharp copy in the very good dust jacket, not price-clipped, spine lightly toned, short closed tear to rear flap fold, spine ends slightly nicked, a little rubbing to tips.
Not in Bloomfield and Mendelson.
