Civilians.Territet: Pool, 1927 Stock Code: 147930
First edition, sole printing, of the author's fourth novel, and the only Bryher novel to be published by her own publisher, Pool.
Bryher was the pen name of Annie Winifred Ellerman (1894-1983). She moved in the 1920s Parisian circles of artists and rubbed shoulders with the likes of Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, and Gertrude Stein. Her wealth enabled her to provide financial support to struggling writers, such as Joyce and Edith Sitwell, and she helped with funding Sylvia Beach's bookshop Shakespeare and Company. Bryher also supported publishing ventures and started, along with her lover, Hilda Doolittle (H.D.), and her husband, the Scottish writer Kenneth Macpherson, the film company and publishing house Pool Group.
