Notes

New and enlarged edition, the ninth overall, first printed in 1889. An early activist for gay rights, the poet and philosopher Edward Carpenter (1844-1929) was known for his provocative views. Here published as part of Swan Sonnenschein's Social Science series, Carpenter's titular essay argues that civilisation is a deviation from humanity's true nature, alongside essays criticising modern science and defending criminals.
