STRAND. 1839 Stock Code: 56231George Vivian (1798-1873), draughtsman and painter from London, travelled through Spain and Portugal making sketches of many old buildings and towns. On his return Vivian made the drawings famous publishing a collection of lithographs under the title "Scenery of Portugal & Spain". The work consists of 33 magnificent drawings on stone by L. Haghe. Vivian selected the most interesting and picturesque scenes for the lithographs, delivering a vivid picture of the countries in the early nineteenth century. Vivian notes: 'Coimbra, in the Province of Beira. This view is taken from a Loggia of the Convent of the Crucios, looking over the Gardens of Santa Cruz. In the middle distance, the Monastery of S. Geronymo, and the Dome of the Se Novo, or New Cathedral. Two Students of the University in the foreground.' Engraved by HAGHE, L.
